To enter the Roots contest, you must produce a short film or multimedia document on the theme of Roots.
Contestants must print, complete and sign the official entry form available on the CBC/Radio-Canada website at www.rcinet.ca/roots.
To be valid, all short films, multimedia documents and entry forms must be sent to the following address no later than March 7, 2010, 11:59 p.m.

Each contestant shall also submit, along with the entry form, a short synopsis (maximum 100 words).
Entry forms, DVDs and CDs become the property of CBC/Radio-Canada and will not be returned to contestants.
Each contestant shall abide by the following criteria:
- Short film and multimedia productions between three (3) and eight (8) minutes long
- If the short film is in a language other than French or English, either wholly or partly, it shall be submitted with French or English subtitles or voice over.
Each contestant acknowledges and warrants that he has obtained all rights necessary for the short film or multimedia document submitted, and that its contents are original, never been broadcast or published in any form, nor in any media or on-line, and is free and clear of any rights, including all rights related to works owned by third parties or related to performances of performing artists that may be included. Each contestant further acknowledges and warrants that the short film or multimedia document does not violate any third-party rights, such as privacy or use of image or music, and does not contain any defamatory element.
CBC/Radio-Canada reserves the right to refuse any short film or multimedia document that it deems offensive or unacceptable. By entering this competition, each contestant grants CBC/Radio-Canada an exclusive licence for the period of December 1st 2009, to May 31st 2010, authorizing public performance throughout the world of the short film or audio podcast on the following CBC/Radio-Canada website: www.rcinet.ca/roots. This licence shall, among other things, enable online voting by the general public from March 1st 2010, to May 31st 2010.
By entering this competition, and in the event that the contestant’s short film is selected as a short-listed or winning entry, the contestant grants CBC/Radio-Canada the non-exclusive right to reproduce, distribute and broadcast the short film at no cost, in Canada and internationally, on various audiovisual platforms of Radio-Canada/CBC, including television, radio, Radio Canada’s web sites and all broadcasting means actually developped or to be developped and also as part of multiple events, until December 1st 2011. However, the license is granted for the duration of the rights for the access to the short films in streaming only on the Radio-Canada International’s website or its successor. The license includes the right to use short extracts no longer than one minute each on all Radio-Canada media and web sites for promotional purposes. Each contestant also grants CBC/Radio-Canada the right to award licences to third parties for the broadcasting of his/her short film and multimedia document. In the event that RCI negotiates the sale of the contestant’s short film either in Canada or abroad, RCI shall retain a sales commission equivalent to 20% of the negotiated licence value. Where applicable, CBC/Radio-Canada shall sign a contract with each winner or finalist, in compliance with the provisions of the applicable collective agreement between CBC/Radio-Canada and the WGC.
Contestants must be 18 years or over at the time of entering the contest, be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident. Directors, officers and employees of CBC/Radio-Canada as well as their immediate family (father/mother, brother/sister, son/daughter) or persons living under the same roof are not eligible to enter.
During the months of March and April 2010, a jury chosen by CBC/Radio-Canada shall select: a) one winner of the Jury Prize in the category Best Canadian Short Film, one winner of the Jury Prize in the category Best Multimedia document, and b) the finalists for the People’s Choice Awards in the category Best Short Film and one winner for the People’s Choice Award in the category of Best Multimedia Document, based on the following criteria:
- Relevancy to theme
- Originality
- Artistic value
- Technical quality
Finalist short films and multimedia documents shall be made available to the public on the following CBC/Radio-Canada website: www.rcinet.ca/roots
During the period of March 1st 2010, to May 31st 2010, the public shall be invited to vote for the winning short films and multimedia productions. The voting shall take place online on the following CBC/Radio-Canada website: www.rcinet.ca/roots and rcinet.ca/racines
The decision of the juries and the result of the votes shall be final, binding and not subject to appeal. During the months of April and May 2010, the winning contestants shall be contacted by phone or email and must claim their prizes as instructed by CBC/Radio-Canada.
The winners shall receive the following prizes:
Best short-film– Jury’s choice - Sony Camcorder HVRV1U– $3 400 Best short-film – Popular Vote choice - iMac 27 inches, 3.06GHz – $1 800 Best Multimedia document – Jury’s choice - iPhone 3GS 32 go – $800 Best Multimedia document – Popular Vote choice - iPod touch 64 go – $500
Total value of prizes: $ 13,000
- 5.1. Winners shall agree to have their name and likeness, including their photograph and their voice, used for advertising purposes related to this contest, without compensation.
- 5.2. To be declared winners, contestants shall sign a document attesting to their eligibility and compliance with these rules and regulations, and releasing CBC/Radio-Canada, as well as its directors, officers and employees, from any and all liability for any damage or loss arising from participation in this contest or from the awarding, acceptance or use of the prize.
- 5.3. Prizes shall be accepted as awarded and may not be transferred.
- 5.4. Refusal to accept a prize releases CBC/Radio-Canada, as well as its directors, officers and employees, of any obligation toward the winner.
- 5.5. Should winners make any false statement, they shall be automatically disqualified from the contest.
- 5.6. CBC/Radio-Canada, as well as its directors, officers and employees, shall assume no liability resulting from losses, delays, mistaken addresses on mail or email messages received, typographical errors, technical, computer or telephone malfunctions, damage to software or computer equipment, fraudulent calls or any other error.
- 5.7. CBC/Radio-Canada, as well as its directors, officers and employees, shall assume no liability whatsoever for any situation in which their inability to act results from an event or situation beyond their control, including a strike, lockout or any other labour dispute at their location or the locations of the organizations and businesses whose services are used to hold this contest.
- 5.8. All personal information, such as your name, address, telephone number, email address and age is collected solely for the purpose of administering this contest and shall not be used for any other purpose without your consent. By providing this information, you consent to it being used for the stated purposes.
- 5.9. By entering, contestants agree to abide by these contest rules and regulations, which shall be applied by CBC/Radio-Canada. All its decisions are final.
