The imagery weaves back and forth between my current life, the idea of growth and evolution, and the legacy left by my family as it expands and contracts. Playing alongside this is a narrative of my feelings surrounding family history and its unavoidable loss with the passing of time.

POPULAR VOTE CHOICE, MULTIMEDIA CATEGORY<BR /> Born in 1960 in London, England to Armenian and Indian parents, choreographer Roger Sinha was immersed in British culture from an early age. He was "closer to fish'n chips than he was to curry...". In 1968 his family moved to Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. This new-found culture clashed with that of his early childhood. In London, Roger had many white friends, but in Saskatoon, he was the only child of colour in his class... and he was bullied every day for weeks. Through Rap, music and dance, Roger tells the story of the racist reactions he encountered as a boy, upon arriving in Saskatoon in the late 1960s.

«Late at night when it’s really cold outside, I take a look down one of my farther off lineages and I try to add names to the list.» In the dark depths of winter, Ross explores his genealogy, trying to connect to his ancestors’ origins on both sides of the Atlantic through digitized online information. Reaching out for his family in the loneliness of cold nights, he starts to learn the traditional tales and legends of the peoples from which he descends. Retelling a Scottish and Ojibway myth, the young man comes to terms with his need for wintertime storytelling – face to face oral storytelling – and begins reclaiming the traditions of his ancestors.

Mehshi Kusa is the first in what I hope to be a series of inter-generational cooking webisodes. In this video, my grandmother, Rachel Safdie, who is of Syrian descent, teaches me to make Mehshi Kusa, or stuffed zucchini, a recipe that she learned from her mother that has never been written down. As the product of immigration and displacement like so many other Montrealers, food is one of the main ways that my family celebrates our roots, and my grandmother, now 95, is still the head chef.
